On January 24 2018, the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) won an award from The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The UMPD was originally accredited in 1996. This year they completed their 8th reaccreditation onsite assessment and earned the Meritorious Award. This award is given to CALEA-accredited agencies that are recognized for 15 or more continuous years with the CALEA Certificate of Meritorious Accreditation.

The benefits of accreditation include, but are not limited to: the development and evolution of law enforcement standards, greater and specific accountability, and increased community advocacy.
