On a sunny day in June, hundreds of Administration and Finance employees gathered on Chapel Field to celebrate one of the University’s greatest assets – themselves! This year’s Employee Appreciation Picnic was a huge success, signified by large employee turnout and the variety of fun activities coordinated for attendees. Even Testudo and President Wallace Loh made an appearance at this annual event.
Under the backdrop of a clear, blue sky, employees enjoyed outdoor games, bingo, and raffle prizes. A new addition to the celebration this year was an activity dubbed “Thank a Terp.” Employees were encouraged to write thank you notes on Maryland-themed postcards to their colleagues and others in the Division. These notes could express gratitude for a job well done, appreciation for a good attitude, or just a simple hello. By the end of the event, over 300 cards had been “mailed” to our employees!
The picnic itself was catered by Good Tidings and Dining Services, and featured hamburgers, hotdogs, and ice cream. With sustainability (and 1,200+ employees) in mind, the planning committee coordinated with Dining Services and Recycling and Waste Management to host a zero-waste event. Attendees were directed to refill their cups at water stations (as opposed to drinking bottled water), and volunteers helped attendees sort their food waste (almost all materials used for the picnic were compostable). The commitment to sustainability even extended to the tablecloths: paper coverings were used instead of the standard plastic ones.
Needless to say, this event would not have been a success without the help of many individuals and departments on campus. A huge thank you to Dining Services, Recycling and Waste Management, and University Recreation & Wellness for their excellent service during this event. Additionally, the picnic involved a dedicated planning committee and dozens of volunteers (including members of senior leadership), who manned various stations around the event and kept things running smoothly.
To everyone who helped plan, and to all of those who attended – thank you for all you do!
